Welcome to Asia and the Pacific
Asia and the Pacific is home to more than half of the world’s population, and is the world’s largest producer and consumer of food. The region’s farmers, fishers, foresters and food workers provide the world with rice, fish, fruits, vegetables, livestock products, and more. Yet, hunger and malnutrition persist, and many small-scale producers struggle to make a living.
At the FAO Global Exhibition, discover how countries in Asia and the Pacific are innovating to transform agrifood systems, support rural livelihoods, and ensure healthy diets for all, while protecting the environment and biodiversity.
Plants
Plants are at the heart of our food systems. Asia and the Pacific is the birthplace of many crops that feed the world today, including rice, bananas, mangoes, coconuts, and a vast array of vegetables. The region’s farmers use both traditional knowledge and cutting-edge science to breed resilient and nutritious varieties, improve soil health, and adapt to climate change.
Explore how plant diversity is being conserved and used to ensure food security and sustainable livelihoods for future generations.
Fisheries and aquaculture
Asia and the Pacific produces more than 90 percent of the world’s aquaculture output and is home to the world’s top fishing nations. Fish and other aquatic foods are vital for nutrition and livelihoods, especially in coastal and riverine communities.
Learn about sustainable fishing practices, innovative aquaculture systems, and how countries are working together to protect aquatic resources for future generations.
Livestock
Livestock are essential to millions of rural households in Asia and the Pacific, providing food, income, fertilizer, and draught power. The region is a major producer of milk, eggs, poultry, pork, and other animal products.
Discover how smallholders are improving animal health and welfare, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and making livestock systems more sustainable and resilient.
Forestry
Forests and trees are vital for food, livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate regulation. Asia and the Pacific is a region of rich forest diversity, from mangroves to mountain forests.
Explore how communities are restoring forests, managing them sustainably, and using forest products to support local economies and healthy diets.
One Country One Priority Product
The FAO One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative supports countries to identify and promote a special agricultural product that is unique to their culture and landscape. These products are often traditional, nutritious, and environmentally friendly.
Find out how OCOP is helping countries in Asia and the Pacific add value, improve livelihoods, and share their unique foods with the world.
Sustainable rice
Rice is the staple food for billions of people, and Asia is its heartland. But rice farming faces challenges from climate change, water scarcity, and declining soil health.
Discover how farmers and scientists are working together to grow rice more sustainably—using less water and chemicals, reducing emissions, and protecting biodiversity—while ensuring food security and livelihoods.
Wall of Fame
Meet the people and organizations making a difference in Asia and the Pacific’s agrifood systems. From innovative farmers and fishers to youth leaders, scientists, and entrepreneurs, their stories inspire action for a better future.
